Gus Van Sant mini bio:
Gus Green Van Sant Junior was born on the 24th July 1952 to Betty (née Seay) and Gus Green Van Sant, Sr. He worked as a production assistant to writer/director Ken Shapiro in Los Angeles during 1976. In 1981, he filmed a movie called Alice in Hollywood but it did not release. After 2 years, he filmed a movie called Mala Noche. He received many good acclaims for the film, Mala Noche. It was named as the Best Independent Film of the year. The success of the film led Van Sant to get a deal with Universal. He made a few pitches to Universal including Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho but they were all rejected. After moving back to Oregon, he took up effort to film Drugstore Cowboy. Drugstore Cowboy was released in 1989 and it met great success. This helped to boost his reputation as a gifted director. Next, he made My Own Private Idaho, which won him an Independent Spirit Award and best actors honors at the Venice Film Festival. His most recent films include Good Will Hunting (1997), Finding Forrester (2000) Last Days (2005), paranoid Park (2007), Milk (2008), Restless (2011) and Promised Land (2012).
