In their routine “Words of Advice”, William S. Burroughs noted that in case later that having been uncovered to the presence of someone you feel as in case you have lost a quart of plasma, keep away from that attendance. It is a proposal that was roundly unnoticed by virtually each character in ambitious science fiction horror film of Tobe Hooper.
In the earlier ‘80s the group behind pictures of Cannon, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus got the rights to novel The Space Vampires of Colin Wilson. It was an extensive, complex, about epic novel which at once place some interesting twists on the old legend vampire and simultaneously owed somewhat Quatermass scripts of Nigel Kneale from the ‘50s. Globus and Golan saw in the novel a possibility to make great a cut above the normal lower budget quickies Cannon was identified for, a serious, huge-scale sci fi blockbuster down the series of Alien, and a bit which would be just as victorious.
To this last they completely changed the name to something with a small more status and rounded up a god-profile crew and cast together with Poltergeist director Tobe Hooper, Dan O’Bannon, the Alien screenwriter, composer Henry Mancini, as well as a cast which included John Gielgud, George Peppard, Olivia Hussey and Klaus Kinski. The movie was budgeted at the amount of $25 million and everybody goes to work.
So, then performers started dropping out of the scheme, there were schedule and money troubles, changes in the script, lots of scenes which could not be shot for one particular reason or any other, all the normal bugaboos. At last Hooper changed together a double plus-hour long edition of the movie.
